So... Jack of all trades or a master of one?
It all depends on the characteristics that you hold and what does it for you aswell as what doesn't do it for you. But... One thing needs to be clear! It is not a con to be a jack of all trades!
I say this due to first hand experience of stretching myself far and wide always wanting to learn more each day. I sometimes find myself in conversations where topic after topic comes up with professionals in their respective fields. I see this as a pro, the fact that you can engage with professionals on a different level and in return learning a lot more.
This may come natural to some but most of the time it comes from a place of knowledge, feeding the conversation with what interests that specific individual holds. If you can engage with multiple people with different backgrounds and not find it difficult, then I believe you are doing it right.
I have played many scenarios in my head, trying to find the perfect way to show everyone that being a jack of all trades isn't such a bad thing. I came to the conclusion of it actually being a tool that a lot of people don't put enough value on.
Let me use an example of building a business from the bottom up with very limited or even no funding.
When starting a business there is a lot that is needed to get your vision off the ground and get it to a point where others fall in love with what it is you are doing. A few major professions that most would say you need are accounting, marketing, analysts, consultants and the list goes on.
Now imagine that you are one of those and have specialized in that specific field, giving you a 9/10 or even a 10/10. Yes you can add that specialization into the business needs and it will cost less compared to hiring someone in that field, but what happens to the rest that you are needing?
Now imagine yourself as the person who is continuously learning, day to day, absorbing everything. You will be quite surprised at how making it a goal to learn something new everyday for 365 days can change the way you live and how you perceive the world of studies and the rest that comes with it.
It started in the beginning of 2017 for me when the unexpected happened to me. My lifelong dream of being an Olympic swimmer came to a halt when funding was pulled. My life changed in an instant as I never thought ahead of what I would do besides being an athlete for the rest of my life or for as long as my body allowed. I then started working in hospitality, retail and then eventually in the sports industry. From day one of being a "average person of society" and not being regarded as an athlete, I decided that I will fill my cup with as much knowledge as possible on a day to day basis.
Today, three years later, I find myself with a lot of cups which are now full of knowledge. I won't mention what type of knowledge is filling these cups but I will mention that knowing how much those cups can contribute to your day to day life is something that no degree or piece of paper can come close to.
Unfortunately, society limits us to degrees, diplomas etc, but I believe that you have control of what limits you, not society. When graduating you go into the field of which you studied, only to find that majority of the time you have to go through a few years of internship, earning very min compared to what you paid to get your degree. Society is basically telling us that experience is what matters, right?
So now look at a person who has had to teach themselves and learn the hard way through day to day practice of certain spheres, are they not more experienced than the person coming out of univeristy/college with a degree/diploma?
Note that this is not a post to take away or down anyone who has worked extremely hard to get their tertiary education or to scare anyone. This is a post for people who feel that there is no chance of success and moving forward in life without that tertiary education. Unfortunately we live in a country where majority of the demographic are those that can't afford to be put through a tertiary institution and this is me saying that it doesn't end there.
Teach yourself something new everyday with the intention of atleast being a 6/10 for each sphere you are dwelling in. Before you know it you will have TEN different knowledge bases where you will be atleast a 6/10.
And let me tell you... PEOPLE NOTICE AND OPPORTUNITIES COME FLYING IN!
